I believe that a balanced approach to portfolio construction provides a reasonable long-term rate of return while at the same time minimizing risk and maximizing income. The tax benefits of such a portfolio are also numerous and well documented. It is my opinion that a disciplined conservative investment philosophy, much like the foundation of a home, is the cornerstone from which to build your portfolio.

Discipline is a fundamental component of my investment philosophy. I believe that clearly defined investment principles lead to greater success and I take a long-term, portfolio approach to investing while managing risk.

• Financial security can be achieved by developing and committing to a long-term investment plan.
• Putting this plan in writing is crucial. Seeing your written goals provides a focal point for the decision making process. The plan is dynamic and evolves as life changes.
• Avoiding loss and minimizing risk is important. Asset allocation and diversification are the most effective ways to manage risk.
  
• Consistent returns cannot be achieved by chasing the latest “hot idea” or product. Only adherence to a disciplined program consistently leads to successful outcomes.
  
• Market timing will not work. You must stay invested and be a consistent long-term investor.
• A regular review process allows for the systematic re-balancing of your portfolio. This brings the portfolio back in line with the original asset allocation and risk profile decisions. Failing to re-balance a portfolio could mean that over time you may be taking more risk than is necessary.
• Don’t follow the pack. Short-term movements in the stock market are driven by the emotions of greed and fear. These short-term movements are irrelevant to long-term investors.
• Always take the time to understand what you own and why you own it. Educate yourself before you put your money at risk. Follow a predefined process for analyzing and researching ideas.
